8 workers charged in Ayyat train crash

THE General Prosecutor, Abdul Meguid Mahmoud, has charged eight railway workers with involuntary manslaughter over a train collision that killed 18 people near Al-Ayyat town, outside Cairo, the local media reported yesterday.

The charged men include the two trains'drivers, their assis- tants and two track monitors, Al-Akhbar newspaper said. No trial date was set, but they were all referred to a crimi- nal court on charges of involuntary manslaughter and gross negligence, Egypt's official Middle East News Agency (MENA) reproted late Thursday. The crash occurred when a water buffalo wandered onto the tracks and was hit by a passenger train. The train stopped and was then rear ended by a second train going at full speed.
