April 6 calls for end to protest law
The April 6 Youth Movement is urging the families of political detainees to attend a hearing on the protest law in the State Council Tuesday, Member of the Information Office of April 6 Youth Movement Mohamed Kamal said Monday statement to Tahrir News. Kamal said that defense lawyer Khalid Ali will plead that the law, which prohibits any political demonstration without approval by the security forces, is unconstitutional. The law entered into force in November 2013, and a number of students and activists were arrested outside the Shura Council in protest of the law. The April 6 movement, a key player in the January 25 revolution, was banned in a decision by the Abdeen court in late April 2014. Ahmed Maher, the founder of April 6 Youth movement, and activists Ahmed Doma and Mohamed Adel were sentenced to three years in jail and fined 50,000 EGP for protesting in violation of the protest law, and assaulting police officers in November 2013 in front of Abdeen Misdemeanors Court, and the court rejected the defendant’s appeal against their verdict on April 7.
