Egypt to suspend daylight saving on Thursday

Egypt will put on hold the Daylight Saving Time (DST), shifting the clock backwards by an hour, starting Thursday midnight, during the holy month of Ramadan that is observed by the country's Muslim majority.

The DST will be restored once more on the night of Thursday 31 July.

Ramadan, a religious month that most of Egyptians observe through fasting, will begin on Sunday.

DST was abolished three years earlier, following the January uprising, but the decision to restore it came in order to alleviate Egypt's energy crisis, explained the statement.

The government said that the decision is linked to Egypt’s economic conditions, which led officials to force frequent power cuts in order to ease the load on electricity consumption.
