Electricity towers targeted in Sharqia attack

Two explosive devices were used to detonate a high-pressure electricity tower in Sharqia governorate Tuesday, reported Youm7.

After the tower collapsed, the bomb squad in the security directorate conducted a security sweep and deactivated two other devices. Four devices had been planted in concrete bases underneath the tower, and the explosion happened hours after the detonation of a nearby gas line.

Head of Egyptian Electricity Holding Company Gaber Dosoky said in a Tuesday press release that officials are “taking the necessary measures to face the negative effects of these attacks.”

He added that maintenance teams headed to fix the damages in the towers, adding that fixing the Sharqia tower will cost around 200,000 EGP ($28,000.)

The company called on citizens to report any acts of sabotage that might happen in the future targeting the electricity network, he said.

Head of Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company Ahmed Hanafy said Aug. 5, according to Al-Ahram, that losses caused by targeting electricity towers reached 232 million EGP in July, adding that 32 million EGP is required for fixing the towers..

An electricity tower and convertor station in 6 October City was attacked July 13, in addition to another explosion in Kafr el-Zaiat’s electricity tower causing a power outage in the city for hours.

The different acts of sabotage targeting electricity sources occured after Minister of Electricity and Energy Mohamed Shaker agreed on operations securing the project of the Helwan power station for 310 million EGP.
