The Ministry of Manpower has received 64,000 compensation claims from Egyptian workers who fled Libya in 2014 due to ongoing violence, according to a Sunday ministry statement.
“Some 24,000 forms have been registered with the Egyptian government for its Libyan counterpart to pay the workers’ dues when conditions stabilize,” Minister of Manpower Nahed Hasan Ashry said.
Forms are sorted to register the name of the facility where Egyptian nationals worked, then categorized according to the type of damage incurred by the workers, be it loss of possessions or wages. Then, the financial value of the damage is determined and authenticated by dated documents, including passports and visas, according to the statement.
“The Libyan government fully ensures the rights of Egyptian laborers who left Libya, and Libyan law preserves the rights of foreign workers even if they were illegal,” the statement quoted Libyan Minister of Labor Abdel Aziz Redby as saying.
The Ministry of Manpower registered 170,000 Egyptian workers who left Libya after its uprising in February 2011 in order for them to claim compensation. It also recorded 180 Egyptians killed in Libya to legally pursue compensation for the victims’ families, the statement said.
Hundreds of Egyptians have been killed in Libya and thousands have returned to Egypt, which has been suffering its own economic problems since the January 25 Revolution.
