Egyptians caught between ‘dinosaur’ state and ”monster’ MB: Gameela Ismail

Many Egyptians feel as though they are floating in an ocean towards insecurity, stuck between a “dinosaur” of a state and the “monster” of the Muslim Brotherhood, politician and media presenter Gameela Ismail told an audience in Washington DC at the Middle East Initiative Wednesday.

Ismail compared the current government to a dinosaur that “steps on its own eggs” for the sake of security, and cautioned that “old interests” may return under the guise of defending national security.

“The upcoming parliament will represent a new political layer of parliamentarians who lack legislative and political experience,” and continue the Hosni Mubarak legacy, Ismail added.

Long-awaited parliamentary elections are expected to begin late October. Originally part of the June 30 roadmap as preceding presidential elections, the presidential elections were carried out in May 2014. The new parliament will be tasked with appointing a new Cabinet. The current Cabinet was reshuffled in late September after the resignation of the Ministry of Agriculture and subsequent accusations of graft and accepting bribes.
