40 Police Academy students expelled over ‘belonging to Muslim Brotherhood’

Forty students have been expelled from the Police Academy for having “political inclinations and belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood,” head of the college Amr al-Assar told Youm7 Monday.Forty students have been expelled from the Police Academy for having “political inclinations and belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood,” head of the college Amr al-Assar told Youm7 Monday.

Police students are closely observed to guarantee they are “far from politics,” Assar said, adding that they are subject to detailed, regular background checks.

In December 2014, 40 junior and senior students were expelled from the academy over alleged Brotherhood affiliations.

The students had first or second degree relatives in the banned group, according to them spokesperson of the Interior Ministry Hany Abdel Latif.

In 2014, senior and junior students would have joined the Police Academy in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013, respectively, during the rule of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF,) with whom the Brotherhood sought a sort of convergence.

In 2016, senior students would have joined in 2012-2013, also under the rule of SCAF.

Before the January 25 Revolution in 2011, it was almost impossible for people affiliated with or related to the Muslim Brotherhood to join the Police Academy.
