Ahlys resolve key to Egyptian league chances

Ahly  s determination to kill off their opponents even when it looks like a game would head for a draw is playing an instrumental role in edging them closer to a fourth straight Egyptian Premier League crown.

If the Red Devils defeat ninth-placed Enppi on Thursday, they will be just three wins short of another league triumph, having remarkably made up for a poor first half of the season after making a host of high-profile signings in January.

Their ability to chalk up stoppage-time wins gave them eight points this season, often leaving opposing players clutching their heads in despair.

All in all, Ahly scored 14 goals in the last 15 minutes this season, including eight in injury time.

In their previous match against Smouha, substitute Geraldo curled in a precious winner eight minutes into stoppage time as Ahly kept their four-point lead over arch rivals and main challengers Zamalek intact, although the latter still have a game in hand.

"I was confident that we were going to hit the net and the goal was a gift for the players," Ahly  s Uruguayan coach Martin Lasarte said after the match, reflecting a belief in the team that their relentless pressure against defensive-minded sides can always yield a decisive winner.

But Enppi can still prove a tough nut to crack as they notably improved lately, securing four wins and drawing three times in their last seven matches.

In their previous match against Ahly in February, they almost snatched a late 2-2 draw in an exciting affair, only to be harshly let down by a controversial offside flag.

Ahly will also face Arab Contractors, Ismaily and nemesis Zamalek in their final three matches of the season.
