Squash: Egypt beats England to claim its 5th WSF Mens World Team title

Egypt s national squash team smashed second seeds England 2-0 in the WSF Men s World Team Squash Championship final early Sunday to claim their fifth title in Washington, DC.

Karim Abdel Gawad defeated Declan James 3-2 (9-11, 11-4, 8-11., 11-9, 12-10) in 107 minutes to give Egypt a lead over England in the tournament s final.

Egyptian squash star Ali Farag needed only 57 minutes to beat Adrian Waller 3-1 (11-6, 11-6, 12-14, 11-4) to end the hopes of the England team with the third game between Tarek Momen and James Willstrop not played.

"It feels amazing. We came here as favourites on paper, but from the beginning it was tough and we were dropping games and matches, which shows the level of squash," Ali Farag was quoted as saying on the tournament s official website.

"Today, you saw the match between Dec and Karim. It was world class and I m glad to have been part of it," Farag added.

“I was lucky enough to play the last point, but it was a team event and I m very proud,” he added.

President of the Egyptian Squash Association Assem Khalifa congratulated the players and Egyptians on the achievement, confirming the team was well prepared for the event.

"Every year this event becomes more difficult for us. Other teams are preparing themselves better and better each year," Khalifa said.

"This event is very important for Egypt. You see here our ambassador has come to support us today, and he would not come to an individual event."

“Squash is the number one game in Egypt, after football. Everybody back home is waiting for us to bring home the trophy," Khalifa added.

The 2019 WSF Men s World Teams took place in Washington DC with participation of 23 teams who were aiming to be crowned world champions.

Egypt called Ali Farag, Tarek Momen, Karim Abdel Gawad, Mohamed Abouelghar to join the Pharaohs squad for the international tournament.

Egypt started the tournament by beating the US 3-0, and then defeated Switzerland also 3-0 to maintain a perfect run in the championship.

In the quarterfinals, Egypt defeated Germany 3-1 before beating Wales 3-1 in the semifinals and booking a place in the tournament s final against England.
