Egypt: clashes as Mursi supporters barred from Cairo protest site

Security forces in Egypt have clashed with supporters of deposed Islamist President Mursi who were trying to reach the site of a former protest camp in Cairo.

Many demonstrators were students from Al-Azhar University, which is in the same suburb as a mosque that was the scene of a pro-Mursi protest camp crushed by security forces in August.

The crackdown on his Muslim Brotherhood still provokes anger.

“I don’t agree with what is happening. Egypt’s youth are dying or put in jail, accused of terrorism. (The military rulers) say they jail terrorists but they’re only academics. The best of Egyptian youth are dying,” cried Mama Nour, who said she was an opposition member.

The interior ministry said security forces took action after 3,000 students blocked roads around the campus.

Police vehicles kept the crowd at bay.

The Muslim Brotherhood was outlawed by a court order after anti-Mursi protests prompted the army to overthrow him and install an interim government in July.
