Egypt s Ahly moved within touching distance of reaching the African Champions League final for the third time in four years, producing an impressive away display to down Morocco s Wydad 2-0 in the semi-final first leg on Saturday. An early goal from Magdi Afsha and a second-half penalty from Tunisian left-back Ali Maaloul helped Ahly put one foot in the final as they chase a record-extending ninth triumph and their first in seven years. Wydad, who were hapless throughout at their own Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, appeared to be dearly affected by the absence of several key players, especially in defence, where natural midfielder Yahya Jabrane was repeatedly exposed. They were then awarded a penalty after VAR review on 39 minutes when Ivorian striker Gbagbo Magbi appeared to have been felled by keeper Mohamed El-Shennawi after running onto a threaded pass, only for Badie Aouk to send a tame spot-kick down the middle and straight into the hands of the in-form goalie. There was more bad news for Wydad in a second half dominated by a composed Ahly side, whose fast breakaways unsettled their opponents shaky backline. After a well-worked counter attack, Jabrane conceded a penalty that Maaloul converted after sending keeper Reda Tagnaouti the wrong way, leaving Wydad with an uphill to climb. Ahly held firm in the latter stages and were barely troubled to secure a vital win on the road.

All Zamalek s players have tested negative for COVID-19 after undergoing PCR tests ahead of the game against Morocco s Raga in the semifinal of the CAF Champions League on Sunday. The White Knights are scheduled to face Morocco s Raja in the first leg of the competition s semis on Sunday, with the second leg scheduled to take place six days later in Cairo. "All Zamalek crew underwent PCR tests in Morocco and they tested negative for Coronavirus," read a statement on the club s official website. Zamalek s Moroccan winger Achraf Bencharki joined the team s training session amid preparations for the crucial showdown after finishing his duty with the North African national team. "Bencharki will join the team s regular trainings on Thursday and he is fit for the game," the statement added. Masry’s Palestinian striker Mahmoud Wadi has announced his departure from the Port Said based club to join rivals Pyramids FC during the current summer transfer window. “I will miss Masry club a lot. I have received huge support from the fans, and I am sad to be departing from Masry. English Football League chairman Rick Parry has praised Liverpool and Manchester United for "showing leadership" after they came up with a radical plan to overhaul the Premier League that he believes will benefit the whole game. The controversial "Project Big Picture" includes proposals to reduce the Premier League from 20 to 18 teams and abolish the League Cup and Community Shield. The club finishing 16th in the Premier League would join the Championship play-offs while there would be greater voting rights for the nine longest-serving Premier League clubs. Under the plan, EFL clubs would receive an immediate £250 million ($325 million) rescue package and a 25 percent future annual share of Premier League revenue. Football in England has been played behind closed doors since March because of the coronavirus pandemic and lower-league clubs are facing financial calamity, with fans barred from stadiums. Parry insists the proposals -- which would be the biggest shake-up of English football in a generation -- offer the best chance of securing the future of clubs outside the top flight but they have been deeply divisive. The Premier League said the plans would have a "damaging impact on the whole game" while the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport criticised "backroom deals". - Liverpool, Man Utd praised - But Parry, a former chief executive of Liverpool and the Premier League, was fulsome in his praise for Liverpool and United, England s two most successful clubs. "It is two of our great clubs showing leadership when it is needed, exercising great responsibility, and from the EFL point of view it is making our clubs sustainable and bridging the gap between the top of the Championship and and the bottom of the Premier League," he said. "The cherry on the icing on the cake is the prospect of a £250 million rescue fund immediately, which does of course help, but the principal part of the story is the biggest reset since the formation of the Premier League which, all being well, will set up the pyramid for the next 25 years. "The proposal is designed for the greater good of English football." Parry said the Premier League has had plenty of opportunity to come up with plans of their own. "They could have come up with a plan like this at any time," he added. "How long has it taken to get a short-term rescue package even to the starting gate? Months." "The message from Liverpool and Manchester United and their ownership is they actually genuinely do care about the pyramid," Parry added. "This hasn t been rushed together, this isn t a Covid plan, it has been years in the thinking and months in the making." Salford co-owner and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville said "there is too much good in this plan to dismiss it". "There are parts of the proposal that require negotiation," he said. "Let s get round the table please PL/EFL/FA/FSF (supporters group). If it suits 9 PL clubs and maybe 72 EFL clubs then let s work with the other 11." But speaking on Sky News on Monday, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: "If we keep having these backroom deals and all these other things going on we will have to look again at the underlying governance of football." The Football Supporters Association said it "notes the report with grave concern" and added: "As football s most important stakeholders, it is crucial that fans are consulted and involved in the game s decision-making."

Each team will be able to register up to four foreign players in their squad for the 2020/21 season but that number will be trimmed the following season, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Wednesday. The EFA has kept the number unchanged for the new season, with each team also allowed to register an additional fifth player providing that he is Palestinian, Syrian, Tunisian, Moroccan, Algerian or Libyan. The EFA said fewer foreigners will be allowed to join league clubs in the following season, although it did not specify any number. Teams are still prohibited from signing any foreign goalkeepers, the EFA wrote in its regulations for the 2020/21 season. A significant change from the past seasons is that coaches who unilaterally terminate their deals with the clubs they manage will not be permitted to take charge of another team in the same season. A coach who is sacked will be allowed to take charge of one more team during the course of the season, the EFA added. Teams will be allowed to loan out up to five players every season, a decision that is likely to affect Cairo duo Ahly and Zamalek, who usually prefer to send most of their fringe players out on loan so they can gain first-team experience. The EFA also set dates for the summer transfer window, which will run from 10 October to 4 November, a few months later than usual after the league was suspended for five months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has played down reports linking him with a move to Barcelona. The 29-year-old was reported to be one of Ronald Koeman’s primary targets in the close season but Wijnaldum said there was “nothing concrete”. “I don’t think it was that serious,” he said. “Otherwise you would have read a bit more, or more would have happened. “The way it looks now, I will stay in Liverpool. Egypt s Olympic Committee on Sunday suspended Zamalek president Mortada Mansour for four years and handed him an EGP 100,000 fine for repeatedly using an abusive language against many sports officials. The Olympic Committee said it acted upon complaints from a number of sports officials and organizations, including the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), the Handball Federation, the chairman of Cairo club Ahly and others.

Egyp s Ahly announced the departure of Swiss coach Rene Weiler on Thursday, naming South African Pitso Mosimane as his successor in a surprise shift from their traditional habit of bringing in European managers. "Mosimane signed a two-season contract starting on 2 October 2020, alongside his assistant crew including general coach and performance analyst," read a statement on the club s official website. "Assistant Coach Sami Komsan and Belgian Goalkeeping Coach Michel Iannacone will stay in their posts while Sayed Abdel-Hafiz to continue as the team s football director, the statement added.

Lionel Messi called for "an end" to arguments at Barcelona as he urged unity at the club he tried to leave before the season. Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp hit back at television pundit and former Manchester United captain Roy Keane on Monday after the Irishman described the Premier League champions’ defending in a 3-1 win over Arsenal on Monday as “sloppy”. Liverpool have won all three of their league games so far this season, beating visiting Leeds United 4-3 and winning 2-0 at Chelsea, but while praising Klopp’s side Keane said they had shown the ability to win while not being perfect in defending. “Strangely enough if you look at Liverpool, they have been sloppy against Leeds, OK done well against Chelsea, sloppy again tonight, but they have got nine points, maximum points, so they will know they need to improve,” noted Keane. “It looks like they are capable of winning football matches without being at their best and that is a sign of a good team.” But Klopp pounced on Keane’s comments. “Did I hear it right, that Mr Keane said it was a sloppy performance tonight?” asked the German coach as he began a post-match interview with Sky Sports. “I could hear you already, did he say that?” After Keane attempted to explain his remarks, Klopp continued. “I just wanted to hear it. I’m not sure I heard it right, maybe he was speaking about another game... it cannot be this game, sorry! “That is an incredible description of this game, that was absolutely exceptional. Nothing was sloppy, absolutely nothing,” said Klopp, to the delight of Liverpool fans on social media, who relished the strong riposte to an old rival. “Alisson had to make one save, they had two balls in behind, you cannot avoid that. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola accused soccer authorities of not caring enough about player welfare as his team faces a busy schedule amid the COVID-19 pandemic without several senior players due to injury and illness. Egypt s Zamalek brought back Portuguese coach Jaime Pacheco for a second spell, replacing Frenchman Patrice Carteron with another defensive savvy boss as they bid to end their long wait for an African Champions League title. Zamalek s eccentric chairman Mortada Mansour, who remonstrated with a handful of coaches over the past six years and fell out with Pacheco in early 2015, made the announcement on the club s television channel in the late hours of Wednesday, bringing an end to a week-long saga. "Pacheco will sign a one-year contract," Mansour said. Carteron dropped a bombshell by leaving the Cairo giants last week, paying a release clause to terminate his deal and leaving the club in a dire situation, less than a month before their mouthwatering two-legged clash against Morocco s Raja in the Champions League semifinal. Zamalek embarked on a frantic search for a new boss and approached another former coach in Jesualdo Ferreira, who masterminded their rare domestic double in 2015. However, the veteran Portuguese manager turned down their offer. The club then turned to Ferreira s compatriot Pacheco, who replaced Hossam Hassan early in the 2014/15 season that eventually yielded a league and cup double. In a brief spell under his guidance, Zamalek won nine games out of 12, drawing twice and losing once before Pacheco suddenly quit the club on January 1, 2015 to take over at Saudi side Al-Shabab. Pacheco is a safe bet for Zamalek s supporters, given his over-reliance on defence, a feature that has been common last season and in this term. A cautious Zamalek side won the CAF Confederation Cup last season under Swiss boss Christian Gross after producing some solid defensive displays. It was the same story this term under Carteron, with the team mainly banking on their counter-attacking abilities as they reached the Champions League last four for the first time since 2016. Juventus have signed Spain striker Alvaro Morata on a one-season loan from Atletico Madrid for 10 million euros, the Italian champions said on Tuesday. The agreement also gives Juve an option to buy the 27-year-old at the end of the season for 45 million euros to be paid over three years, the Turin club added. They could otherwise take him on loan again for the 2021-22 season for another 10 million euro fee and then buy him outright in 2022 at a reduced cost of 35 million euros. Morata returns to the club where he spent two seasons between 2014 and 2016, including scoring in the Champions League final loss to Barcelona in Berlin in 2015. He spent just one season with Atleti, who had initially loaned him from Chelsea but then bought him outright in July last year at a reported fee of 65 million euros. Morata moved to Juve originally from Real Madrid and netted 27 goals in 93 games over two seasons. He went back to Real in mid-2016 but then joined Chelsea after one season. His latest move comes days after an abortive bid by Juventus to sign Luis Suarez from Barcelona and allows the Turin giants to rest 35-year-old talisman Cristiano Ronaldo more regularly. Juve, who are chasing a 10th successive Serie A title this season, visit AS Roma on Saturday although that match could come too early for Morata to feature. Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho is unsure when new loan signing Gareth Bale will return to full fitness but said the 31-year-old’s desire to play for “the club of his heart” again could speed up the process. Bale secured a loan move from Spanish champions Real Madrid back to his former team on Saturday but Spurs said he would only be ready for action after the October international break having injured his knee playing for Wales this month. “I don’t know when Gareth can be back,” Mourinho told the Evening Standard. “The only thing I know is that his motivation is high. He’s so happy to be with the club of his heart, he’s so happy to play for us. “And when a player has this motivation, many times you can short (reduce) the period of recovery, you can short the period of getting fit and ready to play. “We’re more than happy to have him and help him back to a level that made him one of the best players in the world.” Spurs are due to face Leyton Orient in the third round of the League Cup later on Tuesday but that contest was thrown into doubt after a number of the League Two (fourth-tier) side’s players tested positive for COVID-19.

Pep Guardiola says he is keen to extend his Manchester City contract but must first prove to the Premier League club’s owners that he is worthy of a new deal. Guardiola, who has guided City to two Premier League titles since taking charge in 2016, signed a contract extension to remain at the Etihad until 2021. “I would love to stay longer here,” the 49-year-old said ahead of City’s league opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers. “To extend the contract I have to deserve it and we are going to see if I deserve it this season, in terms of how the team goes forward and improves.” City finished 18 points behind champions Liverpool in the league last season and crashed out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals but Guardiola said his future at the club is not contingent on delivering major trophies. “They haven’t pushed anything since day one. They allow me to do my job as best as I can with my staff and players and this is going to continue,” added the Spaniard. “They didn’t tell me when what I have to win - they told me to play. I know the standards of this club, and I have to win and deserve to extend my contract.”

Ahly players basked in a fifth consecutive Egyptian Premier League title, saying they can now look forward to completing a remarkable season by winning the African Champions League. The Cairo giant wrapped up their record-extending 42nd title with six rounds left after gaining an unassailable 20-point lead on top. Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawi thanked his teammates for their efforts all season, highlighting how winning the premier domestic competition had become customary for Egypt and Africa s most successful outfit. "We all know that the league is our preferred trophy and it s normal to win it every season," said El-Shennawi, who has been one of Ahly s best performers in another stellar campaign. "The remaining games in the league will be a good preparation for the Champions League." Ahly will face Morocco s Wydad next month in an anticipated two-legged clash in the Champions League semi-final. They have not won the continent s blue-riband competition since clinching the last of their record eight titles in 2013. "We will celebrate today before starting our preparations for the Champions League from tomorrow," El-Shennawi added. Ahly s right-back Mohamed Hani echoed his sentiment, saying his side are now fully concentrated on ending their African drought. The Red Devils came close to ending their barren run on two occasions, only to lose to Wydad and Tunisia s Esperance in the 2017 and 2018 finals respectively. Ahly s strike duo Marwan Mohsen and Aliou Badji share the burden of putting away the chances that come their way, and they are aware they must deliver in the Champions League. "We will do our best to reach our goal of winning the Champions League," Mohsen said. Senegalese Badji, who joined the team last January, said: "We will forget the league title now to concentrate on the Champions League. We will fight to win all the coming games."
