Egypt's President Morsi to address nation Wednesday evening

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi will address the nation in an "important"  televised speech on Wednesday evening.

No further details have been given regarding the content of the president's scheduled address.

Egypt is bracing for nationwide anti-government protests on 30 June, in which opposition forces will demand Morsi's ouster and snap presidential polls.

Last Friday, hundreds of thousands of Islamist supporters of the president – who hails from Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood – staged counter-demonstrations in solidarity with Morsi's embattled presidency.

Since late last year, Egypt has suffered political deadlock between Islamist forces – which, for the most part, support the president – and non-Islamist opposition forces.

Morsi narrowly defeated Ahmed Shafiq, ousted president Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, in Egypt's first-ever free presidential elections one year ago.
