Egypt court issues release order for Mubarak sons in illicit gains case

A Cairo court on Monday accepted an appeal lodged by the two sons of ousted president Hosni Mubarak – Alaa and Mubarak – against 15-days detention orders for the two men, both of whom face illicit gains charges.

The prosecutor-general's office last week estimated the Mubarak family's total wealth at nine billion Egyptian pounds (roughly $1.3 billion).

Mostafa Duweidar, spokesman for the prosecutor-general's office, told Ahram Online that the prosecutor-general was powerless to appeal the decision, which was filed on grounds that the two men had spent the maximum time in pre-trial detention allowed by law.

The two men, meanwhile, have been unable to prove the source of their wealth.

On 10 June, a Cairo criminal court ordered the release of both men – for the same reason – in a separate case of alleged stock market manipulation.

Gamal and Alaa Mubarak will both remain behind bars, however, as they both face corruption allegations in three other cases.

The two formal presidential scions, along with the ousted president himself, also face charges of illegally using funds allocated to the maintenance of presidential palaces for their private villas, along with other allegations.
