Head of Iranian television channel in Cairo released on bail

Egyptian prosecutors have released the head of the Cairo branch of Iranian television channel Al-Aalam on bail, the channel's website reported on Sunday.

Ahmed El-Sioufy was detained on Saturday after Egyptian security forces raided the Arabic language channel's offices, reportedly over charges that the channel was operating without a licence.

According to the website, El-Sioufy said in a television interview on Sada El-Balad channel that Al-Aalam is currently in the process of obtaining the needed licence and should receive it soon.

He added that the channel has been working for 10 years with the agreement of all security bodies in Egypt.

The incident could signal a return to cooler relations between the two Middle Eastern powers after an attempt at rapprochement under deposed Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi.

Egyptian police also raided and arrested the crew of Qatari-owned Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr channel following Morsi's ouster.
