Egypt to join global Earth Hour

Egypt will participate in Earth Hour, a global effort to spur policy makers to take action to reduce the impact of climate change.

Earth Hour 2010 takes place on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm (local time). Lights will be switched off for one hour.

Minister of Environment Maged George has called on all ministers and governors to participate in this international call and urged citizens throughout the country to ration energy and adopt a positive environment behavior.

Earth Hour is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world.

is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future.

Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to Asia to the Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world from all walks of life will turn off their lights and join together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing in common - our planet.

Earth Hour is more than switching off lights for one hour once a year. Its all about giving people a voice on the future of our planet and working together to create a sustainable low carbon future.

Cairo Governor Abdel Azim Wazir appealed to the public to put out unneeded lights at homes, a move which he said not only aims at reducing Green House Gas'' emissions, but also to make citizens take part in confronting a problem challenging the whole world which is climate change.

Nearly 92 countries will take part in Earth Hour versus 88 countries in 2009.
