EU envoy Bernardino Leon said at a news conference on Monday that the meeting of the EU Political and Security Committee did not discuss sanctions against Egypt, but added that an arms embargo could be an option.
“We discussed all ways to resolve the crisis,” he said, adding that it is hard to predict the resolution that EU foreign ministers would arrive at on Wednesday.
“The EU will work constructively with Egypt,” he added, calling for a democratic process.
A European Commission spokesperson had announced that the foreign ministers of the EU countries are holding a special meeting in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss a common position on the situation in Egypt.
The meeting of the EU Political and Security Committee on Monday was the first round of emergency talks on the situation in Egypt, amid warnings that member states are willing to review their relations with Egypt if calm is not restored.
