Presidency denounces Erdogan’s remarks

Presidential spokesperson Ahmed al-Muslimany has denounced remarks by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said what happened in Egypt was clearly a military coup.

“Agents of the West should not give lessons in patriotism,” Muslimany said. “They will not break Egypt.”

The Turkish Anadolu news agency quoted Erdogan on Tuesday as saying that what happened in Egypt was a clear military coup in which many were killed without mercy.

Erdogan stated his remarks after hundreds were killed when security forces cleared the sit-ins of the supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsy, a close ally of the ruling regime in Turkey.

On Thursday, Egypt canceled a joint naval exercise with Turkey that was scheduled for October, in protest at what it called Turkish interference in Egyptian affairs. This came a few hours after both countries withdrew their ambassadors.
