EU to suspend export licenses for weapons used by Egypt

EU members agreed to suspend export licenses for weapons or goods that could be used by Egypt for internal repression after a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels.

EU ministers condemned the disproportionate use of force against protesters by the Egyptian security forces, as well as the acts of violence carried by militant members opposed to the Egyptian authorities.

According to Catherine Ashton, the EU's head of foreign policy, the EU will not suspend programs for basic social services which help the underprivileged and the most vulnerable people of the country.

EU foreign ministers met to agree on a common response to Egyptian authorities' crack down on protesters supporting deposed President Mohamed Morsy, which left more than a 1,000 dead and 4,000 at least injured since last week.
