Egypt jails 11 Islamists for life for attacking army

An Egyptian military court sentenced 11 supporters of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi to life imprisonment on Tuesday on charges of attacking the army, a military source said.

The men were accused of wounding seven soldiers with birdshot and throwing petrol bombs at military buildings in the city of Suez on Aug. 14.

On that day, one of the bloodiest in Egypt's modern history, security forces crushed Cairo protest camps demanding Mursi's reinstatement, triggering clashes across the country. Hundreds of people were killed, including dozens of policemen.

The army-backed government has been widening its crackdown on Islamists. Top leaders of Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood have been put on trial on charges of inciting violence.

More than 1,000 people have been killed since the army toppled Mursi on July 3, after mass protests against his rule.
