Eighteen women detained during the Fath mosque incident were released Tuesday after calls for their release were set on various social media outlets.
The Bab Al Share’a prosecutor’s office ordered their release pending further investigation while the men who were arrested have yet to be released. According to Egyptian law, the release of the individuals does not mean that the case is closed however certain individuals might be called back for further investigation.
Michael Raouf of the Nadeem Center for Rehabilitation of Torture Victims confirmed the release of the women while explaining that during the Ramses clashes around “165 individuals were arrested.” Raouf confirmed that the 2 women were released in August, after the Fath mosque incident, a minor and a 63 year old woman.
According to the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) the group included four minors arrested since the dispersal of the Raba’a sit-in.
Ikhwan Online released pictures of Hafsa Aly Abbass, one of the minors who was released Monday. IkhwanOnline claimed that the teenager was held on a charge of possessing an illegal firearm, while Raouf denied having any knowledge of this charge.
The women were accused of different charges including possession of firearms, terrorizing of citizens, breaking curfew, belonging to a terrorist organization and causing damage to public property.
According to Lawyers Against the Coup, the women were held in custody for 15 days for investigation since 14 August, while the prosecutor’s office renewed their 15 day investigation period on the 29August.
A lawyer for the “Lawyers Against the Coup” group, Hany Al-Dardeery explained that over “250 were arrested post Rabaa dispersal, and they were falsely charged with fabricated accusations.”
