Cairo Metro lines were running as normal on Sunday morning, according to Transportation Directorate chief Mounir al-Sayed, despite a protest led by a pro-Morsy alliance aimed at shutting down the train service.
Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated forces called for civil disobedience on the Metro, aimed at overloading stations with pro-Morsy protesters creating over-crowding and disruption.
Transportation Police secured the three Metro lines ahead of protests, Sayed said during a visit to al-Shohadaa station on Sunday morning.
The Transportation Directorate has coordinated with authorities in Cairo and Giza, as well as Central Security, to prevent gatherings inside Metro stations.
Groups of police officers and recruits are currently on hand in case of problems, the transportation official added. Female officers had been deployed to inspect female passengers on trains.
Sayed stressed that security forces will not allow any disruptions to the flow of Cairo's underground rail service. Any acts of violence would be dealt with firmly, he added.
