Egypt constitution to regulate torture and discrimination

Egypt's 50-member committee unanimously approved three articles in the Rights and Freedom Chapter of the constitution, said the committee's official Twitter account on Sunday.

The constituent committee, assigned by Egyptian interim President Adly Mansour to amend the country's suspended constitution, approved articles that regulate crimes of torture and discrimination.

The articles are transitional in the amended constitution, which will be put to a public referendum once finalized.

They set a definition for torture in accordance with the law and the need to provide  prompt justice, according to the committee's Twitter feed.

The military suspended Egypt's constitution, passed in December 2012 in a referendum under the rule of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, on July 3 after ousting Mursi following mass protests against him.
