Dozens of Muslim Brotherhood students protested at Al-Azhar University in Nasr City on Monday in front of the university’s administrative building demanding the release of students held in recent protests as well as deposed President Mohamed Morsy.Protesters attempted to break into the building, however, security personnel confronted them. They then left the university and blocked al-Mukhayyam al-Da’em road next to the university, congesting traffic and wrangling with drivers. The situation grew especially tense after some protesters boarded public buses and wrote graffiti condemning the military and Al-Azhar's Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb.
Sources from the administrative security in Cairo University said they arrested Ahmed Abdel Basset, a senior student at Dar Eloum Faculty and referred him to the Dean Mohamed Saleh Tawfiq, who in turn referred him to investigations for rioting and breaking into lecture halls.
The sources added that the student tried to incite violence on Sunday during the march by the Brotherhood students inside the campus. He approached faculty buildings and raised Rabaa al-Adaweya slogans. Security, according to the sources, were unable to arrest him on Sunday as he escaped through the crowds of the march. They did, however, manage to arrest him on Monday while entering the campus.
