Human rights group calls for positive discrimination for Copts

CAIRO: The Head of the Maspiro Youth Foundation for Development and Human Rights Ramy Kamel called for positive discrimination for Copts, women and youth in the new constitution, in a Sunday conference.

Kamel accused the 50- member constitutional committee of deviating from the path of respecting human rights.

The committee should maintain the identity of a civil state and fulfill the people’s will that refused the religious state, he said in a conference on “Positive discrimination for Copts.”

“We came here to call, not beg, for a right. People shouldn’t think about past mistakes and should call for transitional justice, which was implemented in 26 countries all over the world,” he added.

Kamel added that Egypt cannot be a homeland that persecutes certain segments of society.

“We see marginalization and exclusion in Egypt again in the work of the 50- member committee tasked with amending the 2012 constitution,” Kamel said.
