Islamist leader: US, Russia bent on dividing Egypt

A leading Islamist activist claims that the United States and Russia have a common agreement to strike and divide Egypt, arguing that both had previously carried out a similar scheme against Syria when the US moved its warships towards Syrian coasts before agreeing together to divide Syria.

Hesham al-Ashry, who heads the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, a group that presumably mimics Saudi Arabia religious vigilante groups, told Egypt Independent that Egypt’s recent diplomatic and military rapprochement with Russia is of no value. "Russia has nothing to give Egypt more than Lada automobiles," as Ashry put it. “Whoever thinks that Russia possesses much advanced military capabilities is misguided. Even Russian nuclear plants are unsafe.”

Ashry voiced skepticism towards Russian intentions with Egypt. “Russians are not seeking agricultural development in Egypt, and both countries have not coordinated on tourism issues. Therefore, anyone praising the current regime for taking a step away from US hegemony is unaware of the imminent danger facing Egypt.”

According to Ashry, the alleged plot involves a preemptive Israeli strike against Egypt in response to Egyptian-Russian coordination, which is the outcome of the US suspension of military aid to Cairo.

Ashry believes the Egyptian-Russian agreement will ignite a war that ends with Egypt divided between Russia and the US, arguing that both countries seek to entrench their presence in Egypt disregarding any other interest.
