CAIRO: Spokesperson of the 50-member committee Mohamed Salmawy announced on Tuesday the committee decided on Monday to cancel the 50 percent representation quote for workers and farmers in parliament.
Salmawy said that the decision followed a four-hour discussion and was agreed upon by the majority of committee members.
He said that committee is looking to find a better way of guaranteeing workers’ and farmers’ rights in the constitution.
He added that “farmers and workers have the ability to establish parties, which was banned in former constitutions.”
The spokesperson cautioned that “farmers and workers are not the only sector which suffers exclusion, which means we need a fair representation for all, including women, Copts and Youth.”
Ahmed Khairy, representative of the workers syndicate, said they will call for a quota for Copts and women as well, in the search for a suitable electoral system.
