The head of Egypt's Salafist Nour Party, Younis Makhioun, stated Saturday that the road to democracy comes through elections, not protests, imploring supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood to stop demanding the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.
Makhioun told Egyptian state television said he believed the Egyptian army, which removed Morsi from power after mass protests against him in July, is the only national institution capable of running elections at this time, calling on Egyptians to stand by it.
The Nour Party was the only Islamist current to support Morsi's ouster and the political roadmap that followed, which included constitutional amendments and a timetable for new parliamentary and presidential elections.
Participating in the constitutional amendment process, and despite opposing the removal of articles enshrining Islamic Sharia law, Nour Party announced that the amended constitution still safeguards Islamic law, and is embarking on a campaign to call for public acceptance of the charter.
Egypt's new draft constitution was finalised last week after four months of an amendment process. Egypt's interim president, Adly Mansour, is expected to set date for a referendum on the draft soon.
