Police disperse Al-Azhar students with tear gas

Security forces fired tear gas canisters on Sunday evening at dozens of Al-Azhar University students supporting the Muslim Brotherhood after they blocked Mostafa al-Nahas Street in Nasr City to denounce the referral of 18 of their colleagues to disciplinary committees for participating in acts of violence.

Protests at Al-Azhar University have continued since a pro-Muslim Brotherhood student died at Al-Azhar university on 21 November in clashes.

President of Egypt's Students Union Mohamed Badran described the killing of a student at Al-Azhar University as a "catastrophe," calling for the prosecution of the policemen involved in the incident as well as Al-Azhar University leaders.

"No matter what happens in demonstrations, it should not amount to the killing of a student," Badran said in a statement.

Badran called for decisive measures against perpetrators, adding that students would not stop protests until perpetrators are brought to justice.
