Aboud and Tareq, two cousins and prominent members of the Zomor family were convicted of assassinating Egypt’s former President Anwar Sadat on the anniversary of the October War in 1981 during a military parade, along with other members of the Gamaa Islamiyya and Islamic Jihad.

Aboud was sentenced to life imprisonment. They completed their jail term in 2001 and in spite of the court rulings that passed in their favor, former President Hosni Mubarak’s regime kept them behind bars.

They were both released in 2012 when the Supreme Council of Armed Forces ordered the release of several political prisoners who had served 15 years or more of their jail terms.

Their presence in the 39th anniversary of October War, when Mohamed Morsi was in power, was sharply criticized by Sadat’s family.

Following the ousting of President Mohamed Morsi, the two cousins, along with other Islamists, formed the National Coalition to Support Legitimacy and have been calling for the reinstatement of Mohamed Morsi.

Their family members said they were voting for the constitution said that they support the roadmap and the public will.
