Politicians defend possible Sisi candidacy

A number of politicians have denounced statements by former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi, who said Saturday that a presidential run by Defense Minister Abdel Fatah al-Sisi would not “be in favor of the revolution.”

In an interview with the Hayat1 channel, Sabbahi said the military played an “honorable role in the revolution,” but should not be party to a dispute over presidency.

The member of the Free Egyptians Party Amr Aly told Youm7 Saturday that Sabbahi’s statements are “not true” and “could be considered animosity against the people.”

Head of the 50-member committee Amr Moussa said that Defense Minister Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is the most popular figure in Egypt now and has a great chance of winning the presidential elections if he were to run for president.

Since the ouster of Mohamed Morsi on July 3, 2013, Sisi has been seen as the face of the military, and a number of campaigns have emerged to encourage a presidential run, although he himself has yet to make any official announcement.
