Fundraising campaign launched for Cairo's Islamic Museum

A bank account will be set up to receive donations for the restoration of Cairo's Islamic Museum, which was partially destroyed in a recent bomb attack.

Antiquities Minister Mohamed Ibrahim announced the opening of the 'Saving Egypt's Heritage' fund on Tuesday.

The museum's façade and a large part of its collection were damaged when a car bomb exploded outside the nearby Cairo Security Directorate on Friday.

The damage could top LE100 million.

Ibrahim told Ahram Online that the account would help the ministry, which has suffered a fall in its budget due to the decline in tourism, pay for the restoration.

It is important that all stakeholders in Egypt work together to preserve the country's heritage, he added.

A board of trustees, including Egyptian and international experts on history, archaeology and Islamic art, as well as UNESCO, will be established to monitor the fund and determine its spending priorities.
