UNESCO delegates visit Museum of Islamic Art to assess damage to the building and artefacts following bombing; antiquities minister announces number of destroyed items
Delegates from UNESCO and the International Council of Museums visit the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo to assess the damage, cost of restoration and technical support needed from international organisations after a nearby bomb attack last week.
The blast went off 24 January outside the Cairo Security Directorate in central Cairo, which is opposite to the museum, killing four. The attack was claimed by a Sinai-based jihadist group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis.
The Museum of Islamic Art was rennovated in 2010 and was regarded as one of Egypt's best museums.
