National Wages Council discusses private sector’s minimum wage Wednesday

The National Wages Council will hold a meeting Wednesday to discuss the minimum wage for private sector employees, an official at the council told Youm7 Wednesday.

The meeting is to be held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Manpower, in order to resume negotiations between businessmen and employees about the value of wage, according to the source.
 
The source added that General Union of Private Sector Workers submitted a proposal to the Minister of Planning and chairman of the National Wages Council Ashraf al-Araby, to attend the meetings of the council.
 
Head of the GUPSW Shaaban Khalifa demanded a rapid announcement of the minimum wage after the delayed decision sparked anger among workers, Youm7 reported early January.The union’s demand comes in light of the application of the minimum wage to public sector workers, added Khalifa.
 
The interim government had previously announced its commitment to applying the minimum wage to the private sector in January although sectors like tourism and spinning and weaving were excluded.
 
Khalifa demanded a rapid proclamation of the minimum wage’s for private sector employees by the minister of planning, so that businessmen can amend wages accordingly.
 
In his turn, Araby announced that the government will resume negotiations with representatives of private sector to determine the minimum wage.
