On Thursday, Imam of Al-Azhar Mosque Ahmed al-Tayeb called on governments of Arab and Islamic states to take a decisive stand “to halt ongoing blatant infringements on Islamic holy sites.”
Tayeb condemned the recent move by extremist Jewish groups to storm Al-Aqsa Mosque and condemned attempts by Israel to gain sovereignty over the third holiest site in Islam.
On Tuesday, Knesset Member Moshe Feiglin initiated a debate on Israeli sovereignty over the Al-Aqsa Mosque and on Wednesday visited the mosque surrounded by Israeli police and cameraman.
During the last few weeks, several Jewish extremist groups intruded into the mosque and raised Israeli flags on the Dome of the Rock Mosque located inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
Clashes erupted on Tuesday when Israeli forces stormed the mosque to disperse dozens of Muslim who had been staying inside the mosque to protect it.
