Egypt cabinet says will tighten security nationwide

The Egyptian cabinet issued a press statement on Saturday evening to announce it would take all necessary measures to counter terrorism.

Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab called an emergency cabinet meeting after a series of terrorist attacks on police and soldiers.

Mahlab told reporters after the meeting that nothing would stop the government from implementing the transitional roadmap.

Military and civilian judges will be in charge of investigating recent terrorist attacks, and tight security measures will be implemented in strategic areas around the country, the statement said.

According to constitution, military judges are responsible for investigating crimes related to the armed forces, the statement noted.

The cabinet statement asked all workers and groups to delay their demands and prioritise the country`s interests.

The National Defence Council (NDC) also met on Saturday to discuss the country's security status, after six army conscripts were killed in a militant attack earlier in the day.

It also discussed the upcoming presidential election, reported Al-Ahram.

Attacks on security and army forces have been intensifying since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, leaving scores killed.

Militant attacks, bombs and drive-by shootings first broke out in the restive Sinai Peninsula, but in late 2013 the violence spread to other governorates, including the capital.

In response, the army and police launched a crackdown on militants, leaving hundreds dead.
