Security Forces arrested Monday 10 Al-Azhar University students, allegedly affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, who are accused of setting fire to three vehicles during campus demonstrations.
The car of an Al-Azhar University dean was among the torched vehicles, reported Youm7.
Meanwhile, security forces quelled a demonstration led by female students along Youssef Abbass Street in Nasr City close to the university. The forces fired tear gas towards the female students.
Al-Azhar University issued a statement Monday demanding an urgent investigation into the killing of two students during clashes between alleged pro-Brotherhood students and security forces on Sunday.
Al-Azhar University spokesperson Ahmed Zaraa said 62 students were referred to the disciplinary council since the beginning of the second semester after being accused of being involved in violence and destructive actions on the university’s campus, reported Al-Ahram Newspaper on Sunday.
In Mansoura, dozens of students at Mansoura University affiliated with the Brotherhood cut off the agricultural road while chanting against the police and military in addition to raising the four-finger salute of the Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in, MENA reported on Monday.
The students at Mansoura University demonstrated to demand the release of detained students. MENA reported that they set off fireworks and raised the flag of Al-Qaeda, while clashes broke out between different factions of students after some students began chanting against the military.
Since the beginning of the academic year in September 2013, protests against the military-backed government and the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi have erupted continuously in several major universities, often leading to violent confrontations with security forces.
