Former presidential candidate Hazem Salah Abu Ismail was sentenced to 7 years in prison by the Cairo Criminal Court for forging documents to conceal his mother’s dual nationality, reported Youm7.
Abu Ismail submitted documents to the Supreme Electoral Commission in 2012 that did not disclose his mother held an American passport; under Egyptian law, both parents of potential candidates must hold only Egyptian nationality.
