In an apparent attempt to gain Coptic Christian political support, the two leading Egyptian presidential candidates will attend the Easter vigil liturgy celebrated by Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria.
The Fides news agency reported that Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Hamdeen Sabahi will both attend the liturgy. El-Sisi, the former head of the Egyptian armed forces, was a key figure in the 2013 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood leader. Sabahi is viewed as a secular candidate without ties to the Egyptian military.
