Court postpones trial of Mubarak over protester killing to 6 July

The Cairo Criminal Court postponed on Wednesday the retrial of former president Hosni Mubarak, his interior minister Habib al-Adly and six former security officials over charges of murdering protesters during the 2011 uprising to 6 July.

The court continues hearing the defense of former Cairo security chief Ismail al-Shaer.

Shaer's defense had earlier asked to return the case to investigators, protesting the fact-finding committee tasked with probing the case, which coprised members of the Muslim Brotherood. The defense also protested that supplementary investigations had been carried out under former prosecutor general, Talaat Abdallah, who faces charges of spying on his successor, incumbent prosecutor Hesham Barakat.

At least 800 were killed during the uprising that ended Mubarak’s 30-year rule. The majority of officers at police stations across the republic had been acquitted of similar charges.
