Cairo Appeals Court has set 16 July for the trial of 494 members of the Muslim Brotherhood over charges of killing, attacking policemen, setting property on fire at Ramsis Square and the vicinity of Fath Mosque and Azbakeya police station, in the wake of the dispersal of the sit-ins at Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda squares last year.
A total of 44 people were killed in the events. Another 59 people, including 22 policemen, were injured.
Medhat Idris, head of the court’s technical office, said the trial will take place at North Cairo Criminal Court.
The suspects face charges of desecration of the mosque, premeditated murder, thuggery, damaging public and private property and setting them on fire, attacking police, possessing ammunition, blocking roads and endangering lives.
The incidents took place on 16 and 17 August.
