Alleged Nasr City terrorist cell trial adjourned to July 12

The Supreme State Security Criminal Court in session at the Police Academy Tuesday adjourned the case of the alleged Nasr City terrorist cell to July 12 in order to continue hearing defense presentations, Youm7 reported.

The 26 suspects face accusations of planning terrorist attacks against the State, founding and running an illegal group, calling for the end of the Constitution, interfering with state authorities and harming national solidarity and social peace.

In a previous session on June 17, suspects Bassam el-Sayed and Adel Shehta insulted the prosecution in an outburst objecting to words the prosecution used to describe the suspects. Their defense lawyers apologized to the court, which warned the suspects that such phrases may expose them to criminal punishment, El-Media Today reported.

The defense demanded acquitting the suspects based on violations in their arrests and because the suspects were not arrested in the act of committing any kind of punishable felony or misdemeanor.

The defense also said that the suspects were arrested under a void arrest warrant.

“State Security accused me of being involved in the Two Saints Church bombing on Jan. 1, 2011 when I was already in prison,” suspect Mohamed Gamal shouted at the court, according to Mobtada.

Only 18 suspects of the alleged cell’s 26 were arrested. They were arrested in October 2012 according to Al-Masry Al-Youm and the other eight are being tried in absentia.
