Fact-finding committee to visit women's prison due to torture claims

A fact-finding committee formed by Egypt's former interim president Adly Mansour said it will visit Al-Qanater prison next week to investigate reports of the maltreatment and torture of female prisoners.

The families of some of the prisoners have reported beatings and torture of their daughters inside the prison while graphic accounts of torture allegations have recently surfaced on social media websites.

Human rights NGOs have urged an urgent investigation of the claims via a letter to Egypt's prosecutor-general in June.

The same committee had denied allegations of torture in Cairo's Aqrab prison when it visited in April and denied the deterioration of Al Jazeera journalist Abdullah El-Shamy's health when he launched a hunger strike during his imprisonment. Suffering from increasingly poor health, El-Shamy was granted medical release by a court last month.

The report of the commission's investigation into the events that followed the mass protests against, and ouster of, Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 will be published in September, according to committee spokesman Omar Marwan.
