Egypt looks into creating new capital city

Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb's Cabinet is studying a proposal that entails creating a new capital city for Egypt, which would be established east of Cairo, on the Suez-Cairo-Ain Sokhna road, Al-Masry Al-Youm was informed.

The project, which was proposed by the Housing Minister, stipulates moving parliament, the presidential palace, ministries, governmental authorities and houses for the employees to the new city.

"There will be an area for foreign embassies to ensure security and overcome congestion downtown," the source said. "The Housing Ministry and the Armed Forces Engineering Authority would be charged with supervising the project."

Preliminary studies show the project can be completed in two years with a cost of LE1.5 billion.

The source also said that work on the project will start once it is approved and ratified in January. The project targets easing downtown Cairo traffic and is part of the Cairo 2050 project.

Governmental buildings would be relocated to one district in order to make things easy for citizens.

The source added that the Urban Planning Authority said that Tahrir Square would be transformed into a large park.
