The Cairo Criminal Court decided Tuesday to adjourn the trial of Muslim Brotherhood leaders Mohamed el-Beltagy and Safwat Hegazy to Aug. 4 to discuss the defendants’ request to change judges.
The two are accused of torturing two police officers—Mohamed Farouk and Hani Eid—during the Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in in August 2013.
Beltagy and Hegazy, along with two doctors from the field hospital at the dispersed Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in, are being tried for kidnapping and torturing Farouk and Eid.
The defendants include Beltagy, Hegazy, Abdel Azeem Mohamed and Mohamed Zanaty.
On Aug. 29, 2013, Beltagy was arrested in the apartment of his fellow MB leader Khaled al-Azhari in Giza and Hegazy was arrested a week prior in the Mediterranean governorate of Matrouh.
According to investigations carried out by the prosecution in early September 2014, the two policemen were allegedly captured in the Rabaa al-Adaweya sit-in while they were securing a march in support of the MB. The defendants allegedly dragged the policemen into the sit-in and physically attacked them.
