FJP spokesman given suspended sentence

An Egyptian court sentenced the spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party to a suspended sentence of two years, commutable on payment of a fine of LE5,000.

Yasser Mehrez, who was arrested in April, was sentenced on accusations of organising protests, inciting violence and joining an illegal organisation that seeks to overthrow the regime.

Since the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi last year, many of the leaders of the Brotherhood have been jailed on charges of causing violence, terrorism offences, or protesting. Thousands of supporters have also been jailed.
