US Congress delegation starts visit to Egypt

A U.S. Congressional delegation, headed by Republican congressman Darrell Edward Issa, has started a visit to the Egyptian capital Cairo for talks on latest developments in the Middle East region.

The members of the delegation arrived in Cairo on board of a German airlines flight from the German city of Frankfurt, a source from Cairo Airport said Saturday.

Informed sources, meanwhile, expected the members of the congressional delegation to meet with some Egyptian officials to discuss "issues of common interest", as well as latest developments in the region.

"The members of the delegation will meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri on Sunday," a Foreign Ministry official told Anadolu Agency.

He added that talks between the members of the delegation and the Foreign Minister would focus on the situation in the region, including the situation in the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinians and the Israelis are expected to resume on Sunday indirect talks on a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The talks follow more than a month of Israeli attacks on the Palestinian territory, attacks that had left around 1961 Palestinians dead and more than 10,000 others injured.
