Political groups call for corruption investigation against Mubarak

Two Egyptian political groups – the National Association for Change and the Kefaya movement – have called for a protest in front of the prosecutor-general's office to demand an investigation into charges of corruption against toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak and figures from his regime. In press statements on Monday, Ahmed Taha El-Nakkar, spokesman of the National Association for Change, said that the protest will take place at 12pm on Wednesday in front of the High Court in downtown Cairo, where the prosecutor-general's office is located. El-Nakkar said that his group will also file a lawsuit against the judges' panel in Mubarak's ongoing retrial on the grounds that the judges have dismissed testimonies from families of those killed and injured during the 2011 uprising – proof of what he says is Mubarak's failure to protect protesters during the early days of the revolt. Mubarak, his former interior minister Habib El-Adly and six of his aides are currently being retried for their role in killing protesters in January 2011. The verdict in the case will be announced on 27 September. Mubarak has already been sentenced to three years in jail for corruption related charges.
