Son of senior judge killed in armed attack

The son of Mahmoud el-Sayed, a senior judge at the Cairo Appeals Court, was murdered Wednesday afternoon after gunmen passing on a motorcycle opened fire on him in front of his house in Mansoura, the capital city of Dakahlia governorate, officials said.

Dakahlia security forces arrested five suspects, Youm7 reported Thursday. Details are yet to be disclosed, as criminal prosecution authorities are still investigating the murder.

According to an autopsy, the 26-year-old victim died as a result of a bullet which penetrated his back, causing damage to his chest and neck, head of the Forensic Authority Hisham Abdel Hamid told Youm7 Wednesday, adding that the gun used was a 9 mm caliber.

Early reports revealed that the judge and his son were on their way out when the murder took place. The Judges Club announced in a press statement Wednesday that the club would hold an emergency meeting on Friday at the Supreme Court to follow up on the case.

Unverified news reported that Sayed had been looking into cases involving Muslim Brotherhood members, but Judge Mohamed Abdel Hady, member of the Judges Club, told Youm7 Sayed had previously worked in the Cairo Criminal Court.

He was responsible for sentencing former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif to three years in prison in a corruption case, but is most well-known for the case of the destruction of state security files during the January 25 Revolution, in which the head of state security and his aides were declared innocent by court, Hady added.
