Critically ill detained activist Ahmed Doma has been transferred to the Qasr el-Aini public hospital after his health severely deteriorated in prison and following widespread calls on security forces to take measures to save his life.
“[The Ministry of Interior] is obviously concealing news about Doma’s health,” his wife Nourhan Hefzy stated on Thursday night on her Facebook account. Hefzy said she was denied entry at the hospital by security guards, and kept posting about it Saturday night.
Doma continues to suffer from disorders of the digestive system and severe drops in blood alkaline and body potassium rates, according to a report by the emergency room of Ain Shams University hospital published by Hefzy.
More than 30 doctors previously signed a letter describing Doma’s health addressed to prison authorities, Attorney General Hisham Barakat and the state-affiliated National Council for Human Rights (NCHR).
Doma has been in detention since December 2013 and started a hunger strike on Aug. 28, but had to end it a few days ago due to his worsening health condition.
Supporters launched an Internet campaign in his support, hoping to collect a million participants by Nov. 30 to pressure authorities for his release. It has so far collected only 2,600 participants on Facebook.
