Germany tones down travel warning for Aswan and Luxor

Germany has toned down its travel warning for citizens taking Nile cruises between Aswan and Luxor, now allowing trips to ancient touristic sites south of the Nile Valley.

A press statement by the Egyptian embassy in Berlin attributed the decision to intensive contacts with the German side.

Tourism activity in Egypt has been negatively affected over the past three years by political and security instability as two uprisings brought down two of the country's ruling presidents.

Several countries had imposed travel bans to either specific areas or to Egypt in general, but many have since revoked the warnings over the past months following the election of the current Egyptian regime and improved stability.

Egypt’s tourism sector has shown signs that a recovery could be possible by 2015, according to an Oxford Business Group report on Saturday.

"With Egypt’s recent period of relative calm following the May election of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, countries are starting to lift travel advisories and the government is trying to lure tourists through a number of initiatives," the report said.

The number of tourists arriving in Egypt increased 15.8 percent in July compared with the same month a year ago, according to recent figures from the Ministry of Tourism.
